Painful Urination
Amongst Women
One of the most common reasons for painful urination in women is urinary tract infections. Urinary tract infections occur when bacteria make its way up the urinary tract and infects the ureters, bladder or the kidneys. This infection makes it painful to urinate and increases the urge to urinate.
While UTI’s are the most common cause for painful urination in women, there are other causes. Yeast infections and vaginitis can make urination painful until the infection is cleared up. Kidney and bladder stones also make for painful urination. As they pass through the tubes to exit the body, they can cut, scrap and block the urine. This is what causes the pain. The treatments for these conditions are creams and/or antibiotics. Once the underlying problem clears up, the painful urination should cease.
Aside from infections, sexually transmitted diseases can also make urination a painful experience. Chlamydia, Gonorrhea and herpes are the top sexually transmitted diseases that are culprits for painful urination. In order to know for certain what is causing painful urination, a visit to the doctor is in order. If it is in fact an STD, there are treatments that will take away your symptoms as they work to kill the disease.
Amongst Men
Although urinary tract infections are most commonly seen in women, it is not impossible for a man to get one from time to time. When this happens, it causes painful urination along with burning and an urgency to urinate. Treatment for a urinary tract infection is an oral dose of antibiotics. The most common causes for painful urination in men are prostate conditions and urethritis.
When a man has an enlarged prostate due to inflammation or infection, it makes urination a painful thing. Another similar condition called prostatitis also causes men to have painful urination. It involves swelling of the prostate due to bacteria and for the most part, can be treated quickly and easily.
Another common reason for male urinary pain is kidney stones. As stones pass through the narrow tubing in the urinary tract, they can cut, scrape and otherwise irritate. This is why urination is painful. When it comes to kidney stones, the pain can also be attributed to blockage caused by the stones themselves that make urination painful. When a stone is suspected, it is best to get medical treatment as they may become stuck and cause a series blockage. This will not only increase urinary pain, but can be dangerous to the patient’s health.
