Penile or Urethral Discharge

When there is an abnormal loss of fluid through the penis that is not urine or semen it is referred to as penile or urethral discharge. Penile discharge is the most common sign that a sexually transmitted disease is present and this means that medical attention should be sought at once.

The amount of discharge present will vary from a few drops to heavy flow, and can be clear, green or yellow in color. Some conditions make penile discharge heavier at certain times of the day while others allow it to happen at all times of the day. In addition to the actual discharge, the following are symptoms that typically accompany it:

• A burning sensation during urination.
• Feeling the need to urinate frequently.
• Excessive urination at night.
• Lymph nodes located in the groin present with swelling.
• A rash may be present in the genital area depending on the cause of the discharge.

No matter what the cause of penile discharge, the treatment is basically the same. There are several antibiotics that can be given as one dose to clear up many sexually transmitted diseases that cause penile discharge. In certain cases, a fully course antibiotic treatment (7 days) is required. A medical professional will be able to find the cause, diagnosis the problem and pinpoint the proper treatment.
